Al Capp got his professional start working for United Press as a syndicated cartoonist in the early 1930s.  He went on to work on Joe Palooka for Ham Fisher until he launched Lil Abner in 1934.

Capp used the frames of Lil Abner to parody other cartoons as well as celebrities and politicians of the day.   While figures like Frank Sinatra were amused by their depiction in the cartoon (as Hal Fascinatra) others like Liberace (Loverboynik) and Joan Baez (Joanie Phoanie) were less than thrilled.

To Mah Valentine! Today Ah ain't bashful 'cause Ah's got a "S'prise" so take a good "whiff" while Ah starts "makin' eyes"!

Another of Capp's characters, Schmoo can be found on a host of merchandise.  He also created the Kigmies, Nogoodniks (the bad Schmoos) and Bad Iggle.

Capp was a larger than life character himself, opinionated and contradictory.  He carried on feuds both real (with Ham Fisher) and imaginary (with Allen Saunders, creator of Mary Worth).  His influence over the field of cartooning is undeniable.
